Silhouette logo in black on green for GreenGirls JP, a female experimental art group of female forms that are both hyper-visible and the anonymous. The group members are Katrine Burkitt, Gillian De Lear and Karen Krolak, students in Sierra Nevada College's mfa in interdisciplinary arts low-residency program.

ia
to make a salad : a banal act
gillian de lear's thesis exhibition, performed by greengirls jp (katrine burkitt, gillian de lear and karen krolak)
7 pm | Holman Arts & Media Center

greengirls jp explores the processes of play and improvisation through anonymous identity. female forms that are both hyper-visible and the anonymous are revealed as simultaneously alien and familiar, exposed and hidden. by documenting banal domestic acts done in unexpected ways, greengirls jp challenge the roles of femaleness and domesticity.

greengirls jp critiques the nature of separateness and connectedness within the self-schema of being female. the interior experience of being in a skin-tight green suit triggers fundamental body image issues for women. stripping away the context of clothing, race and age begs us to ask: how does being female inform our sense of self? how does our gender affect our actions and behavior?

author Alan Heathcock, mfa in creative writing faculty at Sierra Nevada College

cw
reading: guadalupe garcía mccall, arianne zwartjes, alan heathcock
7 pm | prim library

"my name is guadalupe garcia mccall, but most people call me loop. i like to sit on my porch, listen to the sounds of nature, and write stories about the complexities and magic of growing up. when i write, i think about how important and valuable life and all of its experiences are, so i try to write stories that give meaning to those experiences."
author of shame the stars, summer of the mariposas, and under the mesquite
guadalupegarciamccall.com

"arianne zwartjes weaves an intriguing and deft tapestry of the interplay of medicine, trauma, wilderness, and modern life. finding details and leveraging insights to plumb deeper meanings in what others would simply write off as random acts of individual violence, she conducts a beautiful exploration of how the body’s fragility is the basis of our being human.”
—dr. n. stuart harris, chief of the division of wilderness medicine at massachusetts general hospital on detailing trauma: a poetic anatomy

“if the coen brothers filmed flannery o’connor’s stories using the ghost of grant wood as set and costume designer, the resulting film might resemble the tales in this career-launching collection from alan heathcock, a writer distinguished by his poetic treatment of the quotidian violence that underpins too much of american life.”
